Reed Mangels, PhD RDN FADA earned her PhD in Nutrition at the University of Maryland, College Park in 1989 after completing a Master of Science in Nutrition at Case Western Reserve University and a Dietetic Internship for the Registered Dietitian credential at University Hospitals of Cleveland in 1978, and working in a variety of clinical dietetics positions over a period of years.  She proceeded with postdoctoral training through the National Cancer Institute at the USDA Vitamins and Minerals Laboratory from 1989 to 1992, and later joined the faculty of the Department of Nutrition, University of Massachusetts Amherst for thirteen years, finishing as an Adjunct Associate Professor.  She was co-author of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly American Dietetic Association) Position Papers on Vegetarian Diets published in 2003 and 2009, and co-author of “The Dietitian’s Guide to Vegetarian Diets (2nd and 3rd editions)”, and has authored or co-authored 29 nutrition-related articles in peer-reviewed journals as well as 12 textbook chapters.  She has served as a reviewer for nine peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Mangels has for decades served as Nutrition Advisor for the educational nonprofit Vegetarian Resource Group, as well as the Nutrition Editor and a regular columnist for its quarterly publication, Vegan (formerly Vegetarian) Journal.  She has also served the Vegetarian Nutrition Dietetic Practice Group in numerous capacities for many years:  as Chair, for five years as editor of its publication Vegetarian Nutrition Update, as Fact Sheet Committee Chair, as Nominating Committee Chair, and as a longtime member of its Speakers Bureau.  The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics presented her with its Excellence in Community and Public Health Practice Award after previously honoring her as a Fellow of the American Dietetic Association.   She was also honored by Dietitians for Professional Integrity with its Distinguished Dietitian Award, and twice by the Vegetarian Nutrition Dietetic Practice Group with its Award of Excellence in Service and Leadership.

Dr. Mangels has also written nutrition-related articles for a nonprofessional audience many times, as well as writing or contributing to books for the general public, such as:  (as author) "The Everything Vegan Pregnancy Book" and "Your Complete Vegan Pregnancy", Adams Media;  (as co-editor) "The Vegan Handbook", The Vegetarian Resource Group;  and (as chapter author) "Vegan Nutrition" in Wasserman D., "Simply Vegan, updated 4th edition", The Vegetarian Resource Group.  She continues her multiple-decade freelance writing and speaking on varied evidence-based nutrition topics, including sharing content with VeganHealth.org, and she still serves as an 
Expert Panel Member for the Evidence Analysis Library Vegetarian Dietary Patterns project, and as a Clinic Advisor for the American Running and Fitness Association .
